Serving as a natural border between France and Switzerland, this pass offers a unique cultural transition. The ascent takes you through serene Jura landscapes where the terrain feels more expansive and less jagged than the High Alps. It is a favored route for those undertaking longer tours that incorporate both French and Swiss cycling roads.
To get to Coppet, the start of the climb from Annemasse, plan for 40 minutes by train or a 1 hour and 30 minutes ride alongside Geneva Lake.

With a name inspired by the sickle-like (Faucille in French) shape visible from the Léman side of the pass, this historic climb is a staple of regional cycling competitions. The ascent provides a gradual, rhythmic climb that rewards riders with expansive views toward the Mont-Blanc on one side and the Swiss border on the other. It is well-connected to the Mont Jura resort, often acting as a high-altitude pivot point.
It is a favorite of the old Tour de France, for it has been 41 times a part of it, the last time being in 2004. It also often appears in the Tour de l’Ain French cycling competition.
This year, the women's Tour de France did their 3rd stage there, from Geneva to Poligny.
To get to Gex, the start of the climb, get a train to Geneva (20 minutes) and then ride for 1 hour and 20 minutes or, ride directly from Annemasse during 1h 50 minutes.
