A forested climb that provides a different atmosphere compared to the open, rocky passes of the High Alps. The ascent is demanding, with steep sections that snake through dense, ancient woods, offering welcome shade on hot summer days. This pass is popular for its secluded feel and the dramatic shift in scenery once you finally break through the treeline near the summit.

 

It has known recently, in 2017 and 2020 two stages of the Tour de France and its Categorie changed from Hors Categorie to 1, leaving the Col du Grand colombier to be the only Hors Categorie pass in the Jura mountains.

 

To get to the Seyssel-Corbonod train station, near the start of the climb, a 1 hour and 10 minutes train trip from Annemasse with a connection in Bellegarde-sur-Valserine is needed. And then the ascension is just 5 minutes away.

Rich in both cycling history and the historical heritage of the French resistance during World War Two, this pass is a meaningful and reflective ride. 

 

It is a less-frequented route that offers a quieter, more personal connection to the landscape and the region's past. The climb is steady and manageable, making it a great addition to longer routes that explore the valleys near the Valserine river. It has also known the Tour de France once, in 2012. 

 

To get to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine train station from Annemasse, a direct, 45 minute train is needed.
